Walmart Inc. is headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. Originally, Walmart was a discount store –it was aimed at providing customers with the lowest possible prices. In just five years, by 1967, there were already more than 20 Walmarts in the United States, and sales reached $12 million.
An important milestone in the company's development was in 1983. To respond to the emergence of smaller merchants, Walmart opened Sam’s Club, a network of wholesale warehouses. For the first time in the history of American business, the company managed to increase sales to $1 billion in less than 20 years.
The company has several branches. The Walmart US segment in the USA is a merchandiser operating under the Walmart and Walmart Neighborhood Market brands, as well as e-commerce brands. There is also Walmart International, which includes both retail and wholesale. The Sam's Club segment is a warehouse club for members only.
The company continues to actively grow, for example, in 2022 Walmart Health expands to Florida with 5 more health centers. In July 1962, Sam Walton opened the first Walmart store. Seven years later, the company was officially registered as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
In 1970, the founders decided to make Walmart a publicly-traded company. The first stock was sold at $16.50. In 1972, the company stock became listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the #WMT symbol.
In 1991, the company went global, opening Sam’s Club in Mexico City as the result of a joint venture with Mexican retail company Cifra. In 2000, Walmart made online shopping available for US customers through Walmart.com. In 2018, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. became Walmart Inc.
