Theta is a decentralized network for video streaming that is based on blockchain. The mainnet aims to develop a network that will overcome the disadvantages of the video streaming industry, including poor infrastructure and high costs. Theta allows users to relay videos by sharing bandwidth and computing resources on a peer-to-peer basis and get rewards for doing so. The streaming quality of the videos on the network improves when new users join, so more bandwidth becomes available. Moreover, Theta is open-source software. This allows users to create new applications and services on top of it.
As with any other blockchain project, the Theta network has a governance token - THETA. The token was introduced in 2018. At that time, it was given to buyers as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Later, THETA coins were converted to THETA based on the mainnet.
The total supply is limited to 1,000,000,000 tokens. The token is shared between network participants, the Theta team, and a reserve pool.
Unlike many blockchain networks, Theta has two tokens. The second one is TFUEL. THETA is a governance token that allows its holders to participate in the decision-making process. Thus, THETA holders can vote on the development of the mainnet. At the same time, TFUEL powers transactions. TFUEL works the way gas does on Ethereum. The total supply is capped at 5,000,000,000 tokens.
